#16: The Internet and BGP
A website in another country may feel one click away, but thousands of independent networks first need to agree on where the traffic should go. They make those decisions using the Border Gateway Protocol, or BGP, whose earliest version dates to 1989. The protocol has been updated extensively, yet its basic role remains central enough that Cloudflare describes the Internet itself as relying on BGP to exchange information about which networks can reach particular blocks of IP addresses. Its age shows most clearly in security.
