A physician can have a smartphone, an electronic patient chart, laboratory results available online, and a small device clipped to a belt that would have been completely understandable in 1988. Pagers have proved unusually difficult to remove from hospital life. Research in the 2020s has described traditional bleeps and long-range paging equipment as deeply embedded in health systems even while institutions introduce encrypted messaging platforms. Their persistence is partly organizational. Hospitals have built decades of routines around paging particular teams, reaching whoever is on call, and escalating urgent messages through systems everybody already understands.
