Walk through a neighborhood with maples, pines, palms, or old backyard fruit trees, and nothing about them feels cosmic. They feel local. Ordinary. Maybe in need of trimming. Nevertheless, researchers have estimated that Earth has about 3 trillion trees, while the Milky Way is commonly estimated to contain roughly 100 to 400 billion stars. Even allowing for uncertainty in both counts, the comparison is startling: our planet’s trees outnumber the stars in our own galaxy.
