The Vayntrubs Moved to the US as Refugees
Milana’s life would have been very different had her parents not immigrated to the US. In the ’80s, they were living in the USSR and although they built a loving community in their neighborhood, life wasn’t exactly rosy for them because they were Jewish.
So, when their country loosened its restrictions on immigration, like many others, they decided to move to America to build a better life. As always, the process was complicated and long. They ended up living in Vienna for three months, then in Italy for nine months before they were finally granted the green light to move to America in 1989.
