Life in 1899: Photographs from the Turn of the Century

Before Detroit transformed into the world’s automotive capital, residents often spent weekends relaxing at Belle Isle Park. Designed partly by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the island park offered locals an escape from urban factory life. Families rented rowboats to navigate peaceful canals, held outdoor picnics along shaded lawns, and gathered on stone bridges.
