#9: Je tu il elle (1974)

Chantal Akerman wrote, directed, and starred in Je tu il elle, an intimate film about loneliness and desire. She plays a young woman who, after a period of isolation in her apartment, embarks on a journey that leads to two intense encounters. The film’s raw, personal style and its direct depiction of a lesbian relationship placed it at the forefront of a new wave of European art-house cinema. Je tu il elle refused to follow standard movie rules, instead offering an unflinching look at a woman’s inner world.
