#17: Orlando (1992)
Tilda Swinton was the perfect choice to play the title character in Sally Potter’s adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s 1928 novel. Orlando follows an aristocrat who lives for centuries without aging and, at one point, changes from a man into a woman. Woolf’s book was a tribute to her lover Vita Sackville-West, and Potter’s film captures its playful spirit. With its stunning visuals and Swinton’s knowing glances at the camera, the movie treated gender not as a fixed point but as a fluid performance across the grand stage of history.
