#15: Poison (1991)
Director Todd Haynes announced himself as a major new voice with Poison. Inspired by the writings of Jean Genet, the film weaves together three distinct stories: a sci-fi parody, a mockumentary, and a prison romance. It was a cornerstone of the “New Queer Cinema” movement, which rejected polite, assimilationist stories in favor of something more radical and challenging. The film was confrontational and structurally daring, treating desire as something complex, sometimes dangerous, and always worthy of serious artistic exploration. It was not a film that aimed to make anyone comfortable.
