Hollywood has always been cruel about age. Careers fade, phones stop ringing, and the parts get smaller. But a handful of actors refused to follow that script. They kept working, kept showing up, and then (in their sixties, seventies, or eighties) they delivered the performance that made everyone realize they had been underestimating them for years.

Farnsworth spent more than six decades in Hollywood (first as a stuntman beginning in 1937, later as a character actor) before David Lynch cast him in this quiet lead role at age 79. He played Alvin Straight, a real Iowa man who drove a lawnmower hundreds of miles to visit his estranged brother. The performance earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination, making him the oldest nominee in that category at the time.
