By the looks of things, you might think that Japanese farmers simply paint over certain parts of their fields to create this mesmerizing piece of agricultural art. This is definitely not the case. In case you didn’t know, there are various species of rice plants, each of which can produce different colors when nearing maturity.

To create these wonderful designs, farmers grow rice crops on particular parts of their fields. As the crops grow older, passengers on planes and helicopters can catch a glimpse of their painstaking works of art from above. These designs serve no purpose other than to entertain those with a bird’s eye view. Maybe birds also appreciate the pictures.
