Taking your shoes off before entering
Americans often get asked by people from other countries whether we actually keep our shoes on at home. While this is true for many households, this isn’t always the case. In Asia, wearing the same shoes indoors that you use outdoors isn’t just disrespectful but also incredibly gross. Imagine accidentally stepping on dog doo and pushing traces of it into your carpets.
In Japan, you need to take your shoes off at the front door. There are indoor slippers you can use to keep your feet from touching the cold floor. A pair of socks can also help, but they might get dirty from constantly touching the ground.
