Tipping is an absolute no-no in Japan. Their businesses already have set prices for their products and services, and their staff receives a nice wage for their work. Why pay extra for something that you should expect? There have even been cases of employees chasing down guests who left money as a tip.

However, if you want to leave a tip in Japan, there’s a very specific procedure you need to follow. Place money inside of an envelope and hand it directly to the person you want to tip. Giving them money flat-out is considered rude.
