Fancy, artful trucks

Dekotora, the cultural practice of adding decorations to trucks, may seem like a super-specific tradition because it is. However, lots of people get in on the fun. This tradition started in the 1970s after the movie Torakku Yarō (Truck Yarou) came out, and since then, you’ll hardly see a plain-looking semi zooming down the highway.

In the movie, people covered their trucks from the roof to the tires with all sorts of paintings, decorations, vibrant colors, and lights to make them stand out. Dekotora isn’t just something for the older generation to get in on. Many modern trucks driven by younger drivers also sport all sorts of accessories.
