In Japan, it’s not uncommon to see people handing out tissues to passersby. Best of all, you don’t need to hand over any money. While this is particularly odd, especially to our Western minds, there are several good reasons why you’ll need to use tissues.
First of all, the temperatures in many parts of mainland Japan can reach 104° so having a tissue on hand to wipe away the sweat will keep your shirt collar nice and clean. Second, if you’re feeling under the weather, tissues will help you cover your nose and mouth while you sneeze. Finally, companies can market their products and services by imprinting their brands on the tissues.
