Throughout history, the rights and protections that modern workers often take for granted—the eight-hour workday, safe conditions, and fair wages—were not handed down freely. They were fought for by ordinary men and women who stood up against formidable opposition. Rising from factory floors, agricultural fields, and community organizers’ ranks, these working-class heroes risked their livelihoods, freedom, and lives to secure economic dignity for millions.
#1: Karen Silkwood
Working as a chemical technician at a Kerr-McGee nuclear plant in Oklahoma, Karen Silkwood uncovered severe safety violations and missing plutonium. After joining the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers International Union, she gathered evidence regarding corporate negligence and exposure risks. Her mysterious death in a 1974 car crash while en route to meet a reporter made her a lasting symbol for worker safety and whistleblower protection.
