Home of Over 1,600 Languages
Quick, think of how many languages people speak in your country. If you’re in the US like us, the most commonly used languages are English, Spanish, and Chinese. However, people that know more than one language usually come from immigrant families, or they live in areas dominated by a particular demographic.
But if you look at India—a country with over 1,600 spoken languages—it makes sense that almost everybody can speak at least two languages. The country has categorized 122 of those 1,600 languages are “major” languages, meaning that more than a million people speak are known to speak them. In order, the top five most spoken languages in India are Hindi, English, Bengali, Marathi, and Telugu.
