#6: Mark Spitz Swims to Gold
Before Michael Phelps, there was Mark Spitz. For those who don’t know Mark, he was the most successful, record-holding swimmer until Michael Phelps broke his record in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Mark Spitz competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. During that time, he won seven gold medals. No big deal.
On top of winning those seven gold medals, each win was in record-breaking time. Way to kill two birds with one stone, Mark! His 1972 wins were a major comeback from his 1968 Olympics participation. During the Mexico City Games, Mark bragged that he would win six gold medals. Instead, he won only two. He came back better than ever in 1972 and swept the swimming competitions. How’s that for a comeback?
