#4: Philip I of Castile (1478 – 1506)
People called Philip I of Castile “The Handsome,” but his personality wasn’t nearly as attractive. Born in 1478 as a Habsburg prince who became King of Castile in 1506, he married Joanna of Castile in 1496 and immediately made her life miserable. He was openly unfaithful and worked to take control of her royal authority. To justify it, he spread claims that Joanna was unstable, using that narrative to sideline her politically. His manipulation and pressure fed into her long isolation, which kept her confined for much of her life.
