#19: Richard III of England (1452 – 1485)

Richard III of England married Anne Neville in 1472, and there was always a dark cloud over the union. Ruling briefly from 1483 to 1485, he came from the House of York, a powerful family, which had already been tied to the death of Anne’s first husband, Edward of Westminster. Anne was a wealthy heiress, and the match strengthened Richard’s position. While some accounts suggest moments of stability, political tension never really left them. When Anne fell ill and died in 1485, rumors spread that Richard saw her death as an opportunity to remarry and secure his fragile hold on the throne.
