How do you carve a 60-foot face into a mountain of granite? Very carefully, and with a lot of dynamite. This image of Abraham Lincoln’s head taking shape on Mount Rushmore shows the raw, rugged process. From 1927 to 1941, sculptor Gutzon Borglum and a crew of 400 workers blasted and chiseled the faces of four presidents into the Black Hills of South Dakota. They removed nearly half a million tons of rock.
