We all remember the ritual, right? After a long night of trick-or-treating, we’d dump our pillowcases on the living room floor, and then came the inspection. Mom or Dad would sift through the pile, looking for unwrapped pieces or anything that seemed strange. Most of the time, the fears were just urban legends (at least that is what we thought). Every now and then, a story would appear on the news that made you check that candy just a little more carefully. While extremely rare, these cases were real.
#1: Razor Blades in Candy Bars (1960s–1980s)
The razor blade in the apple is the ultimate Halloween urban legend, a story that terrified generations of parents. Sociologists found that most claims of tampered candy were pranks, but police did document a small number of genuine cases. During the 1970s, there were isolated incidents where people found needles and razor fragments stuck inside candy bars. These few real events were enough to fuel the nationwide anxiety.
