#13: Wartime Utility Wear (1940s)
When the 1940s hit, men’s wardrobes got drafted. Fabric was rationed, cuffs vanished, vests got axed, and single-breasted jackets ruled. Trousers slimmed, rayon and recycled fibers stepped in, and Eisenhower jackets brought military practicality to civilian life. Meanwhile, Zoot Suits defiantly flaunted excess, sparking riots over “wasted” cloth. Even hats and shoes felt the pinch. Fashion survived, but just barely.
