22 Household Items With Forgotten Uses

Every home used to have its own little secrets. Not mysterious secrets, exactly, but practical ones. A kitchen drawer could hold a tool that opened bottles, tightened shoes, sharpened pencils, or rescued a shirt button five minutes before church. A laundry room might have something heavy and mechanical that saves a person’s hands from wringing out wet sheets. A sewing basket could carry an object that looked like a toy but had a purpose everyone in the house understood. Many of these things were passed down quietly. Parents taught children how to use them. Grandparents kept them because “you never know.” Some came with instructions printed on boxes, while others were explained once and remembered for life. Then technology moved forward. Pull-tabs arrived. Central heating became normal. Refrigerators changed kitchen habits. Automatic washers took over the hardest part of laundry. Plastic packaging, smartphones, disposable goods, and modern appliances slowly pushed these objects into basements, antique shops, and memory.

#1: Church key opener

A church key opener did not look like much, which was probably why it worked so well. It was slim, metal, and often tossed into a drawer beside rubber bands, matchbooks, and loose screws. Before pull-tabs became common on cans, this little opener punched triangular holes into flat-top beer or soda cans. One hole let the drink pour, and a second hole helped air flow in so it did not glug and splash. The other end usually pried the caps off glass bottles, making it useful at picnics, fishing trips, ball games, and backyard cookouts.
