Human encroachment on tortoise habitats and ecosystems caused the species to become endangered. However, by the 1990s, just 12 million people remained. Despite its seeming enormity, the immensity of our universe helps us put everything into perspective.
There were 6 million people in 2010 and the population has continued to decline ever since. A teeny-tiny enclosure housed 9,000 tortoises. The populace would have suffered immensely if they had been killed.
