Notable guests included John Jacob Astor of the Astor family Waldorf-Astoria fame and silent movie actress Dorothy Gibson. The Macy’s magnates, Isidore and Ida Straus, also boarded but tragically didn’t survive. Interestingly, a descendant of the Straus is linked to a recent tragedy during the Titanic expedition.
