#8: Bangladesh Well Project (1970s–1980s) Led to Mass Arsenic Poisoning

In the 1970s and 1980s, Bangladesh and UNICEF installed millions of wells to replace unsafe surface water. Early tests said the water was safe, but arsenic in underground rock went unnoticed. By the 1990s, millions were exposed. Studies later linked widespread illness and deaths to the project meant to protect public health.
