Historical Efforts to Help That Had Terrible Consequences

During the Congolese Civil War in the late 1990s and early 2000s, UN peacekeepers were sent to stabilize the region. Investigations later claimed some troops traded weapons for gold with local militias. Although only limited charges were filed, the allegations raised concerns that peacekeeping efforts may have unintentionally prolonged violence in the region.
