Anyone who has moved with a dog, cat, or other household pet knows the process can come with extra costs and extra patience. For most taxpayers today, those pet-moving costs are personal expenses and not deductible. Current federal rules have sharply limited moving expense deductions, generally reserving them for qualifying active-duty military members. Even when a move is tied to a job change, most people cannot deduct the transportation or care costs for a pet during relocation.
