When the “Iron Lady” spoke, the world listened. In 1984, before Mikhail Gorbachev was the leader of the Soviet Union, he visited British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. After their meeting, she famously announced, “I like Mr. Gorbachev. We can do business together.” Her endorsement, and the handshake that went with it, gave the reformer crucial credibility in the West. It was one of the first signs that a thaw in the Cold War was truly possible and that this new kind of Soviet leader was someone the West could engage.
