Nightmare Alley took a sharp turn from fantasy to noir. It followed Stanton Carlisle, a drifter who rose through the ranks of a carnival as a mentalist, and later tricked high-society clients with promises of contacting the dead. His ambition and deception led him down a dark road.

Critics admired the mood, the performances, especially those of Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett, as well as the way the film explored how ambition and self-deception can destroy a person. With its dusky visuals and moral unraveling, it earned an 80 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
