46. The Shining (1980)
The Shining is another famous Stephen King novel, and was the most famous adaption before It became a cultural phenomenon. It stars Jack Nicholson portraying the delightfully unhinged kind of character he is known to be so good at.
The film opened the same weekend as The Empire Strikes Back and was very successful at the box office despite its intense competition. Stephen King was not pleased with the film due to how it had deviated from his novel’s story, claiming it was good for its imagery but wasn’t good as an adaption.
