20. Emma (2020)
Emma is the original Cher Horowitz, and the perfect example of a character who we shouldn’t love yet somehow do. When Jane Austen first set out to write the novel, she was quoted to say, “I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like.”
The result was Emma, the last novel to be published in Austen’s lifetime and considered by some to be her masterpiece (which is saying a lot, given how incredible all her books are). The novel has been adapted into film numerous times, most recently in 2020.
