On the topic of great writers from the Victorian era, no list would be complete without Charles Dickens. And considering how many attempts to adapt the greatness of his stories to film and the stage there have been, of course a few hits would rise up along the way.

1946’s Great Expectations is one such adaption. The script for the 1946 film was written after one of the writers saw a play script written by Alec Guinness that had shortened the original novel, inspiring him to make a movie out of it.
