You can’t talk about American slang without talking about AAVE, or African-American Vernacular English. So many of our slang words, new and old, originate from AAVE and are popular in Black communities long before they reach the mainstream. “Dig” as a slang word is an example of that. Using “dig” to describe when you like something or someone got really popular in the 1960s.

Now, we all know that saying “I dig it” doesn’t mean you literally go outside and dig a hole. The kids these days might think that because this is a slang phrase we rarely hear anymore. Honestly, some people say it ironically nowadays, and that’s about it. Should we bring this slang word back?
