#19: MiniDisc Player
As the music medium was shifting away from cassette tapes, MiniDisc tried to combine tapes and CDs. These little plastic-encased cartridges worked the same way as a CD but were better able to protect it from damage. They even had their own kind of portable player known simply as a minidisc player. Ultimately, they weren’t super successful, but after their initial release in 1992, they lasted until 2013. Like Betamax tapes before them, MiniDiscs just weren’t picked up as quickly by the music industry as CDs.
