Not-So-Big Reward
This one is not a recent scam but it could very well happen even now. It was the 90s and the OP’s friend kept getting letters from a contest that made it seem like he was going to win $10,000. After making it to the final round, all he had to do was call a 1-900 number that charged $2 a minute.
When you’re about to win $10,000, you obviously don’t mind spending $2 a minute, right? Except, in this case, the friend took about ten minutes to navigate the automated menus and the whole thing ended with him winning…ONE WHOLE DOLLAR!
