Not That I Can’t Answer. I’m Just Having a Panic Moment
The phone is something that many introverts loathe. Why? It all starts with the fact that phone calls are so irksome. A ringing phone is extremely offputting. It demands immediate attention, much like an alarm clock or a crying baby. When someone calls, they have to quickly switch gears, pulling their attention away from whatever they were doing — and when they’re deep in thought, as most introverts are, that’s really annoying.
Furthermore, they don’t have time to mentally prepare for the conversation, which can be difficult for introverts. Countless phone calls (or at least the first few moments) are made up of small talk. Because most introverts dislike small talk, this immediately starts the call on an awkward note. This nonsensical chitchat feels insincere, and if you’re like me, you’re left wondering how much is enough to be courteous before progressing on to the “real” conversation.
