Neighbor In The Hallway Alert
Introversion is frequently viewed as a weakness that must be overcome. Countless introverts report that teachers and other adults frequently put them in situations that made them feel uneasy or overwhelmed. Here are a few examples: Making a quiet student take over as group leader. Giving the lead role in the class play to a reserved child. For group projects, pair quiet students with the most outgoing students in the class. Such acts are frequently justified: “You’re too quiet, and getting you out there more will help you get over it!”
However, introversion is not something that can be “overcome.” Severe social awkwardness and social anxiety are serious issues that must be addressed, especially if they cause major distress or impairment in daily life. However, it must be handled with compassion and professionalism. Forcing shy or anxious children into social situations where they feel overwhelmed or uneasy is not the best way to help them.
