They Need To Check Who Owns The Number Calling
One of the things most introverts despise about phone conversations is how difficult it can be to end a conversation without feeling guilty. Because most phone talkers are extroverts, they could happily chatter on for hours. Suppose an introvert doesn’t have a cushion in their schedule, such as a time limitation that enables them to exit gracefully. In that case, they feel stuck, just like in the carpool scenario: they want to leave the party but want to mingle for another hour — or four.
This can be exhausting for the introvert with limited social energy. Most introverts need to go online to see who owns a phone number to know what they might get into if they pick up the phone. One more reason phone conversations can be sapping is that they remove the use of nonverbal signals, forcing introverts to rely solely on their verbal abilities — which, for many introverts, are not their strongest suit under pressure. It can feel like flying in the pitch black.
