There’s a famous quote: “Don’t make fun of anyone who mispronounces a word; it means that they learned it by reading.” Hors d’oeuvres is an interesting one, which I’m sure many restaurants are used to people mangling.
On the flip side of the coin are those words that we’ve only ever heard out loud, so we’re not completely sure how to spell them. Mostly, though, we can work out from our knowledge of English, whether how we’ve written it down makes sense or not. Or not, in this case.
