#17: The Frito Bandito (Frito’s Chips, 1967-1971)
From the late ’60s to the early ’70s, Frito’s Chips had the Frito Bandito as its mascot. He was a stereotypical Mexican bandit who would rob people of their Fritos, voiced by Mel Blanc. Like the Taco Bell dog, he was a subject of controversy because of Mexican stereotypes. So he was retired after four years. Writing this, I did look up one of his commercials, and while I get the controversy, “I am the Frito Bandito” will now be stuck in my head.
