The only reason to smile in Finland
Take a look at this chart to understand how Finns express certain emotions. As you can see, they maintain an expressionless expression when feeling happy, sad, delighted, romantic, or sorrowful. We don’t mean to be morbid, but Finnish funerals must be really odd to outsiders.
However, there’s one time when Finns will smile, laugh, and jump for joy. That is when their national hockey team wins the world championship. So far, the country has won the cup a total of three times, in 1999, 2011, and 2019. That means the average 30-year-old Finnish person has smiled at most three times in their life while great-grandparents might have never smiled at all.
