The importance of umlauts
English speakers don’t have time for wild accent symbols like circumflexes and umlauts (we had to Google these terms). In fact, if we could Americanize all words adopted foreign words, we’d get rid of all of that nonsense. But in Finland, you can make a fatal linguistic error if you forget to add symbols to your writing.
For example, those umlauts can mean the difference between common phrases and phrases used only in Alabama. These words look alike but sound completely different. We’re not even going to try to pronounce this. We’d probably butcher it and make it sound like something even more inappropriate.
