The Military Background of James Arness
Before enchanting audiences as Matt Dillon, James Arness had a different role altogether – as a soldier. Drafted in 1943, his journey from training on American soil to the battlegrounds of the Battle of Anzio exemplifies his courage. Despite his natural talent for acting, it was his time in the army, and surviving an injury in combat, that perhaps prepared him for the challenges of Hollywood.
James Arness’s military career, however, took a drastic turn just 10 days into the Battle of Anzio. A fierce encounter left him with a severe foot injury, leading to his medical discharge from the army. This turn of events ended his military journey, setting the stage for his future in acting. Yet, this experience in the armed forces remained an integral part of his life story.
