Often, those movie quotes that people have been repeating for decades are wrong. Sometimes, a person may have got a word or two wrong, while others butchered the quote altogether. There are several reasons this happens. Many of these movies came out before YouTube or even home video releases, and the faultiness of human memory made us misremember the quote. You might hear a quote said by your friend and repeat it, not knowing it was wrong. Other people have more of a supernatural explanation, such as the Mandela Effect, but that’s for another article altogether. No matter the reason, we’re here to clear the record. Here are some movie quotes that are often misquoted. And if you ever misquoted these, don’t feel too bad. Now you know, and you can annoy your friends by correcting them.
#1: The Wizard of Oz
Misquote: “Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore.”
Real Quote: “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”
This is one of the most quoted (or misquoted) lines in cinema history. In the misquote, Dorothy was sure that they weren’t in Kansas. In the actual movie, she has a hunch but isn’t 100% sure, which does change the quote a bit and raises some questions.
For one, how can you look at the world of Oz and not be 100% sure that you’re not in Kansas? Where in Kansas can you find witches, Lollipop Guilds, and Munchkins? I’ve driven through Kansas several times, and I guess they’re hiding somewhere in the long stretches of farmland.
