We usually learn about the lives of historical figures in isolation, without regard to the context of what else was going on in the world unrelated to them. So, it can seem very surprising when we find out that one historical figure lived at the same time as another, even though the events of their lives seem to us to be from different centuries. #1: Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) & Charles Darwin (1809-1882)
Lincoln and Darwin were even born on the exact same day. I don’t know if it’s inexplicable as much as it is just sad to think that when one man was theorizing evolution, another was still struggling against slavery. We would reach an understanding about our development from animals, but we still couldn’t recognize our shared humanity.
