Fictional characters often feel completely original, but many were shaped by real people. Writers, actors, and creators have borrowed traits, stories, careers, and even appearances from people they knew or encountered. #1: Popeye Was Inspired by Frank Rocky Fiegel
Popeye first appeared in the Thimble Theatre comic strip in 1929 and was modeled on Frank Rocky Fiegel, a tough sailor and Chester, Illinois, resident known for his fighting reputation. Creator E. C. Segar knew Fiegel as a boy and borrowed several of his traits. Fiegel’s likeness was later honored on his gravestone.
