#15: Cadillac – Escalade (1999)
By the 1990s, Cadillac faced an uncomfortable image problem. The brand remained synonymous with American luxury, but younger affluent buyers were increasingly attracted to European manufacturers, while the rapidly growing luxury-SUV market threatened to leave Cadillac behind. The Escalade, introduced for the 1999 model year, initially arrived as a relatively straightforward response to vehicles such as the Lincoln Navigator. Its first generation shared obvious foundations with other General Motors SUVs, but subsequent versions gave the Escalade a much stronger Cadillac identity through bolder styling, additional technology, and increasingly luxurious interiors. The vehicle soon achieved something the company desperately needed: cultural relevance among younger buyers. Athletes, musicians, entertainers, and celebrities embraced it, while appearances in music videos and popular culture made the Escalade a recognizable status symbol. It did not solve every challenge facing Cadillac, but it became one of the marque’s most commercially and culturally important modern products.
