90% of Cubans Own Their Homes Outright
Perhaps one of the most surprising statistics about Cuba is that approximately 90% of its citizens own homes or apartments. We don’t mean they took out a loan to purchase a home; they own their homes outright! To put this into perspective, the homeownership rate in the US is just about 68%.
So, how do so many Cubans own their own homes? The government has pretty much dropped its laws regarding how every piece of real estate belongs to the country, and people with money started buying homes left and right. They’re pretty cheap, too, by dollar standards, but foreigners cannot purchase land in Cuba. Don’t even try to circumvent this restriction.
