Steak Scarcity
Cuba had a pretty weird relationship with cows. We don’t mean weird as in what you’re probably thinking, but weird as in you weren’t allowed to eat beef. Well, it’s not that eating beef was illegal, but the stuff was so scarce that it was reserved for those with special dietary needs.
But if you visit Cuba, you can find beef in high-end restaurants and fancy stores. The quality of the cuts isn’t that great, though. In April 2021, the government finally loosened its semi-ban on beef, so now, consuming steak isn’t all that uncommon. It’s still more expensive than other sources of protein, but at least you won’t receive a fine if you eat steak.
